As someone who’s passionate about story-telling and aesthetics, I managed to translate that passion into a profession thanks to the fashion industry. Aside from being a teacher, I write for fashion magazines and act as a consultant for various companies. I also frequently appear on tv and can be heard on various radio stations. This grants me the opportunity to have a direct line of contact with the public. I find the best way to carry out my job is not to think about the seller or the consumer but rather, to think about those who can only afford to dream. Afterall, you can still look great without “looking good” and with limited monetary wealth. You just need to choose the right outfit and wear it with the right level of confidence and presence.

How does one teach Fashion Styling? How much of it is “science” and how much comes down to personal taste?

If it came down to just the science, it would be too lifeless; If it was just a matter of personal taste, it would be too imprecise. Fashion Styling is the marriage between hard science and emotion. Teaching this subject matter is a huge responsibility. You have to make sure your students strike the delicate balance between staying true to themselves while at the same time venturing out of their comfort zones.

What type of job would you suggest graduates of ADL persue?

I started as a booker. It’s a wonderful job that allowed me to travel and discover a whole new world I never knew about before. It’s a little-known profession that not many consider and no school teaches. As a booker, I learned that the two most important things for a profession in this indistry are to make sure you learn the ropes and to take the good with the bad.

You once said that you can be fashionable without needing to be rich or good looking. Do you still believe this? If so, what’s the secret?

I absolutely do. You need a strong self of self and a lot of personality. In other words “talent”. The best thing about talent in this context is that it is a completely different flavor of talent depending from person to person.

You worked alongside Giusi Ferrè in the popular tv show “Buccia di Banana”.  How is this celebrated icon of Italian fashion journalism behind closed doors?

In my life there are three key female figures: My mother who gave me life, my aunt who saved it and Giusi who changed it. She’s a woman who’s kindness is second only to her intelligence. She’s tough but fair, just like she is on Buccia di Banana. Working with and learning from her has been an absolute honour. Above all though, she’s a friend. I could not imagine a life without her.

What will be prevailing fashion trend of 2019 according to you?

There will be two, quite antithetical prevailing notions: Simplicity and intricacy. I predict these two stylistic notions will overlap and intertwine and form something new. As far as the price tag is concerned, I’m sure it will be well beyond anything reasonable, but that’s part of the appeal.

What has been the worst outfit of 2018?

Pick a look at random from any influencer at random. They can’t take offence because their look is devised by the comapanies who sponsor them.

On tv and on the radio, people often ask you for fashion advice. Which of these requests has stood out to you throught the years?

There was once a 50 year old man who needed a new wardobe because he had decided to start his life over as a woman. I gave up on that one. The technical hurdles were too numerous. The most annoying questions I receive are the ones from women who you know only expect to be told that their fashion sense is already perfect the way it is. I take great satisfaction in tearing whatever notions they have in their head of how perfect they are. We all strive the make the world a better place afterall and I do my part.

Un appassionato della storia e del bello, che ha trovato nella moda il modo per fare di una passione un lavoro. Oltre all’insegnamento nella mia vita ci sono le riviste per le quali scrivo, le -fortunatamente- molte consulenze per le aziende e poi la radio e la tv, che mi danno il privilegio di avere il contatto con il pubblico. E l’unico senso che ha davvero il mio lavoro è farlo pensando a chi la moda non la decide e non la subisce, ma spesso può soltanto sognarla. Ecco, si può essere bellissimi pur non essendolo per niente, anche con pochi soldi. Basta saper scegliere le cose giuste e indossarle con ironia e un filo di arroganza. Quella buona, che mette a tacere le lingue sciocche e biforcute di chi i soldi li spende senza guadagnarli, spesso in marchi di cui nemmeno conosce il valore.

Come si insegna il Fashion Styling? Quanto è “scienza” e studio, e quanto invece gusto personale?

Se fosse solo scienza sarebbe troppo esatta. Se fosse solo gusto sarebbe troppo definitivo. Il fashion styling è ragione e sentimento che si incontrano per un aperitivo, a Milano. Insegnarlo ai ragazzi è una responsabilità enorme: quella di guidarli alla scoperta dei loro universi estetici cercando di rispettarli e al tempo stesso di forzare la mano quel tanto che li porti fuori dalla comfort zone. Sperando di non creare dei mostri.
Quali sono gli sbocchi professionali che tu consiglieresti o che magari sono meno conosciuti per chi si diploma ad AdL? Io ho cominciato facendo il booker, un mestiere bellissimo, che mi ha fatto viaggiare e conoscere un mondo per molti completamente ignoto. E’ una professione molto poco conosciuta, che i ragazzi spesso non considerano e che nessuna scuola insegna. Facendo il booker ho imparato due cose fondamentali per qualsiasi professione: acquisire un metodo e saper mandare giu i bocconi amari. La gavetta conta più della laurea.

In passato hai sostenuto la teoria secondo la quale “si può essere dei gran fighi anche senza essere né ricchi né belli”: ci credi ancora? E se sì, qual è il segreto?

Confermo e sottoscrivo. Ci vuole personalità e istinto. In una parola talento. E il bello del talento sta proprio nel fatto che non è di tutti.

Hai lavorato fianco a fianco con Giusi Ferrè nella fortunata trasmissione “Buccia di Banana”: com’è la più raffinata e conosciuta penna del giornalismo fashion italiano dietro le quinte?

Nella mia vita ci sono tre donne importanti: mia madre che la vita me l’ha data, mia zia che me l’ha salvata e Giusi che me l’ha cambiata. E’ una donna la cui generosità è seconda solo alla sua infinta cultura, severa ma giusta -come lei ci imponeva in Buccia di Banana. Lavorare con lei e da lei imparare tutto il possibile è un assoluto privilegio. Ma Giusi è soprattutto un’amica preziosa e insostituibile, non saprei immaginare oggi la mia vita senza le sue telefonate o i nostri incontri settimanali.

Quale sarà il trend del 2019 secondo le tue previsioni? E tu cosa ne pensi?

Saranno due, credo, e piuttosto antitetici: da un lato un sopravvento dello street style con le sue semplificazioni e la sua leggerezza fatta di dettagli alle volte squisitamente fine a se stessi. Per contrapposto, un massimalismo imperante, con un gioco complicato, bellissimo e molto pericoloso di stili e sapori che si stratificano creando nuove forme e nuovi mondi. Nel nome di prezzi ben oltre la soglia del ragionevole. Ma anche questo contribuisce ad alimentarne il fascino.

Siamo solo a fine ottobre, è vero, c’è ancora tempo per peggiorare, ma qual è stato l’outfit da bocciare assolutamente del 2018?

Scegli una influencer a caso e prendi un suo look a caso. Non si offenderà comunque: quello che indossano è in ogni caso scelto dalle aziende che pagano i post.

Alla radio, come sulle riviste, ti capita spesso di dover rispondere alle domande e alle richieste di consigli da parte del pubblico. Qual è la più strana che ti sia capitata?

Quella di un uomo che si sentiva e voleva vestirsi da donna e che in oltre 50 anni non aveva mai trovato il coraggio. Ho mollato il colpo, i problemi tecnici mi hanno sopraffatto. Ma le più fastidiose sono quelle di certe signore che ti chiedono consiglio al solo scopo di sentirsi dire che sono perfette già così come sono. Spesso sono un compendio di volgarità provinciale rivestita di etichette. Demolire le loro certezze è un piacere, un privilegio e un dovere preciso: dobbiamo consegnare a chi verrà dopo di noi un mondo migliore. Almeno nel vestiario.
