Cosa rappresenta lo “Zalando Visionary Award”

Zalando è nota soprattutto per essere una piattaforma di shopping digitale attiva dal 2008. Da allora, si è ridefinita tra i creativi come motore di scoperta per i nuovi designer emergenti che cercano di affermarsi sul mercato. Ha iniziato nel 2022 con la speranza di sostenere la nuova generazione di designer che stanno ridefinendo gli standard del settore. I nuovi designer non vengono riconosciuti solo per i look mostrati in passerella, ma anche per le pratiche etiche e le scelte sostenibili che si nascondono nel loro processo creativo.

Con la Generazione Z, il mercato ha oscillato tra l’ultra fast-fashion (Shein) e i nuovi designer che garantiscono la tracciabilità e la qualità del prodotto finale. Giunto alla sua quarta edizione, per il 2026 i finalisti erano tre: KYLE HO, Milk of Lime e INSTITUTION, tutti selezionati da una giuria composta da esperti del settore. Il loro approccio lungimirante, la loro visione chiara e la loro volontà di promuovere la creatività sono ciò che li ha fatti notare e invitati a Copenhagen per presentare le loro collezioni e proclamare un vincitore. La piattaforma digitale ha promosso un cambiamento positivo e questo premio è solo un altro lato della medaglia.

La cerimonia di premiazione a Copenhagen

Durante la Copenhagen Fashion Week (dal 27 al 30 gennaio), è stata allestita un’installazione per mostrare ogni designer con il proprio mondo e la propria visione. Prima della cena celebrativa che ha premiato INSTITUTION con lo Zalando Visionary Award, Giuliano Calza, mentore dei tre marchi, ha condotto una tavola rotonda. Calza ha espresso la sua opinione sulla cultura e sul futuro della moda, fornendo al contempo una visione approfondita dell’ispirazione dei finalisti.

“Sono lieta di congratularmi con INSTITUTION per aver vinto lo Zalando Visionary Award. La determinazione di Galib nel promuovere l’artigianato, unita alla sua capacità di integrare diverse esperienze culturali, è stata il fattore decisivo”, ha dichiarato Sara Spännar, membro della giuria e VP Brand & Creative di Zalando. Con sede a Milano, Galib Gassanof ha fondato il suo marchio come organizzazione socio-artistica con una forte etica alle spalle. L’uso di materiali naturali e la loro lavorazione attraverso il coinvolgimento delle comunità contribuiscono a rafforzare l’impatto sociale e consentono all’artigianato di continuare a tessere.

La scelta di INSTITUTION come vincitore

La sua collezione e i valori del suo marchio mirano ad affrontare il cambiamento sociale e l’arte coinvolgendo piccole comunità e mantenendo viva l’artigianalità. Per questo motivo, i giudici hanno deciso di assegnare a Gassanof lo Zalando Visionary Award. Inoltre, questo premio non si riflette solo nei suoi look finali, ma anche nell’essere in linea con i requisiti di sostenibilità della Copenhagen Fashion Week e nella fiducia che sarà più che in grado di presentare una nuova collezione con i suoi valori e le sue proposte caratteristici.

Durante la Copenhagen Fashion Week di agosto, INSTITUTION presenterà la sua collezione Primavera-Estate 2027 con il supporto di Zalando. Non si tratta solo di un premio in denaro di 50.000 euro, ma di un percorso completo che include il tutoraggio di Edward Buchanan, i casting con la direttrice Emma Matell e un sostegno finanziario di 35.000 euro per la produzione della sfilata. Durante la premiazione, la giuria ha sottolineato all’unanimità la sua visione chiara, la sua maestria artigianale e la sua visione culturalmente ricca che si riflette perfettamente nel lavoro presentato.

Questo era esattamente il desiderio di Zalando. La creazione di uno spazio aperto per i designer emergenti è già stata realizzata attraverso il loro negozio online; consentendo ai finalisti di presentare il loro lavoro durante una Fashion Week “emergente”. Ciò che ha attirato l’attenzione della giuria è stata la nuova prospettiva che Galib Gassanof sta creando con il proprio marchio e, se questa è solo la quarta collezione, sono ansioso di scoprire cosa porterà INSTITUTION ad agosto.

INSTITUTION is the winner of the Zalando Visionary Award

And the award goes to… Galib Gassanof! The Georgian-Azerbaijani designer, also founder of INSTITUTION, has been awarded the Zalando Visionary Award that supports new perspectives on fashion and emerging designers’ sustainable approaches.

What does Zalando Visionary Award represent

Zalando is best known for being a digital shopping platform that has been up since 2008. Since then, it has been redefining itself among creatives as a discovery engine for new emerging designers looking to break into the market. It started back in 2022 with the hope to support the new generation of designers who are redefining the industry’s standard. New designers are not just being recognized for the looks shown on the runway but the ethical practices and sustainable choices that hide in their process.

With Gen Z, the market has been switching between ultra fast-fashion (Shein) but also to new designers that are accountable for their traceability and bring quality to the final product. Now on its fourth edition, for 2026 there were three finalists: KYLE HO, Milk of Lime, and INSTITUTION – all chosen by industry experts that formed the jury. Their forward-thinking approach, clear vision, and will for pushing creativity is what got them noticed and invited to Copenhagen to present their collections and declare a winner. The digital platform has been promoting positive change, and this award is just another side of the coin.  

The award ceremony at Copenhagen  

During this Copenhagen Fashion Week (from January 27th to January 30th), an installation was created to show each designer with its own world and vision. Before the celebratory dinner that awarded INSTITUTION the Zalando Visionary Award, Giuliano Calza, mentor for the three brands, led a panel discussion. Calza expressed himself about culture and the future of fashion while giving an in-depth look at the finalists’ inspiration.

“I am delighted to congratulate INSTITUTION on winning the Zalando Visionary Award. Galib’s determination to promote craftsmanship, combined with his ability to integrate different cultural experiences, was the deciding factor,” said Sara Spännar, jury member and VP Brand & Creative at Zalando. Based in Milan, Galib Gassanof has founded his brand as a social-artistry organization that has strong ethics behind it. The use of natural materials and their manipulation by engaging communities helps strengthen social impact and allows the craft to keep on weaving.

The choice of INSTITUTION as a winner

His collection and brand values are to approach social change and artistry while involving small communities and keeping craftsmanship alive. For this reason, the judges have decided to gift Gassanof the Zalando Visionary Award. And then again, this prize is not only reflected in his final looks but in being aligned with the sustainability requirements for Copenhagen Fashion Week and trusting that he will be more than capable of presenting a new collection with his characteristic values and propositions.

During Copenhagen Fashion Week in August, INSTITUTION will present its Summer-Spring 2027 collection with Zalando’s support. This is not just an award with a cash prize of €50,000 but being walked through. This includes mentorship from Edward Buchanan, castings with casting director Emma Matell, and €35,000 in financial support for the production of the show. During the awards, the jury unanimously emphasized his clear vision, craftsmanship, and culturally rich vision that perfectly reflects on his presented work.

This was exactly Zalando’s wish. Creating an open space for emerging designers is already done through their online shop; allowing finalists to present their work during an “emerging” Fashion Week. What has caught the jury’s eyes was the new perspective that Galib Gassanof is creating with his own brand, and if this is just the fourth collection, I am eager to find out what INSTITUTION is bringing in August.

I protagonisti del progetto

Il gruppo cinese Consinee combina la comprensione della versatilità della fibra con una continua sperimentazione. Ha definito lo standard di riferimento per le fibre di cashmere sostenibili e i filati pregiati utilizzati sul mercato. Fondato nel 1999 a Ningbo, in Cina, oggi è il punto di riferimento per i marchi di lusso in materia di pratiche etiche e trasparenza nella catena di approvvigionamento, controllandone ogni aspetto.

D’altra parte, Sara Sozzani Maino è direttrice creativa della Fondazione Sozzani e membro di diversi comitati che promuovono la consapevolezza per un’industria più responsabile e, di conseguenza, per un pianeta più sostenibile. Nel 2009 ha fondato Vogue Talents insieme a Franca Sozzani. Da allora è stata giudice, consulente e sostenitrice di talenti creativi indipendenti che cercano di farsi un nome e di promuovere il marchio Made in Italy.

In questo arduo lavoro ha incontrato Galib Gassanof, suo partner nel progetto “Echoes of Craft”. Il designer georgiano è direttore creativo del suo marchio INSTITUTION e co-creatore di ACT N°1 insieme a Luca Lin. INSTITUTION ha presentato la sua collezione di debutto lo scorso febbraio e da allora ha continuato a lavorare e ad avere successo, oserei dire.

Il progetto

Il cuore di questo progetto è indubbiamente l’artigianato. La base della nostra storia e ciò che accomuna tutti i prodotti tessili che utilizziamo. Non è solo un oggetto, ma un gesto che dà forma alla cultura e un linguaggio senza tempo che continua a parlare e continuerà per sempre.

Echoes of Craft è composto da 15 pezzi speciali provenienti dall’archivio del guardaroba personale di Sara Sozzani Maino e da elementi di cappotti pastorali. La struttura dei pezzi e del progetto si muove geograficamente e sulle loro superfici. I cappotti pastorali sono ampiamente utilizzati nelle steppe dell’Asia centrale, tra cui Mongolia, Mar Caspio, Caucaso e altopiani balcanici, solo per citarne alcuni.

I capi e la loro realizzazione

In superficie, i capi parlano di sperimentazione con trattamenti e volumi. I capi sono realizzati a mano utilizzando tecniche specifiche che mirano a mettere in risalto il valore della maglieria e l’antico patrimonio che possiamo e dobbiamo preservare. I volumi entrano in gioco quando filati fini e morbidi e feltro rigido si mescolano e il loro contrasto crea un gioco dinamico. Non viene utilizzato solo il cashmere, ma anche lana, mohair, alpaca, yak e seta.

Drappeggi in cashmere ultraleggero, cappotti doppi cuciti a mano, maglioni maxi spazzolati e frange in cashmere Donegal sui maglioni danno la sensazione di un ambiente leggero e rilassato, che è il luogo della creazione ma anche dove vorremmo essere trasportati.

La mostra Echoes of Craft è visitabile presso lo Spazio Carra dal 13 al 16 gennaio, durante i giorni del Pitti Uomo. In questo modo, uno spazio dedicato all’artigianato e ai valori tradizionali convive con le nuove collezioni di moda. Lo Spazio Carra è anche sede espositiva di opere d’arte e ospitare Echoes of Craft segna un altro punto di riferimento nel mondo dell’artigianato.

Echoes of Craft in Pitti Uomo

Sara Sozzani Maino brings Galib Gassanof into Echoes of Craft: the new project for Pitti Uomo 109 entrusted to them by Consinee – a leading group in the market of fine yarns and certified cashmere fibers.

The active participants

The Chinese group, Consinee, combines the understanding of the fiber’s versatility with continuous experimentation. It has set the benchmark for sustainable cashmere fibers and fine yarns used in the market. It was founded in 1999 in Ningbo, China but today is the reference point for luxury brands when it comes to ethical practices and transparency in the supply chain, controlling every aspect of it.

On the other hand, Sara Sozzani Maino is the Creative Director of Fondazione Sozzani and a member of several committees promoting awareness for a more responsible industry and, therefore, planet. In 2009 she founded Vogue Talents along with Franca Sozzani. Ever since she has been a judge, consultant, and advocate for independent creative talents looking to make a name for themselves and pushing forward the Made in Italy label.

In this arduous work she came across Galib Gassanof, her partner for the “Echoes of Craft” project. The Georgian designer is the creative director of his brand INSTITUTION and co-creator of ACT N°1 with Luca Lin. INSTITUTION presented its debut collection last February and has been working and succeeding, may I say, ever since.

The project

The core of this project is indubitably craftsmanship. It is base of our history and what ties together every fabric-based product that we use. It is not just an object but a gesture that gives shape to culture and a timeless language that continues to speak and will continue forever.

Echoes of Craft is developed in 15 special pieces from the archive of Sara Sozzani Maino’s personal wardrobe and elements from pastoral coats. The structure of the pieces and the project moves geographically and on their surfaces. Pastoral coat items are widely used across Central Asia steppes including places like Mongolia, the Caspian Sea, Caucasus, and the Balkan highlands to name a few.

The garments and its realization

On the surface, the garments talk about experimentation with treatments and volumes. The pieces are handcrafted using specific techniques looking to highlight the value of knitwear and the ancient heritage that we can and must preserve. Volumes come to play when fine soft yarns and rigid felt get mixed and its contrast creates a dynamic interplay. It is not just cashmere that’s being used but also wool, mohair, alpaca, yak, and silk.

Drapings with ultra-light cashmere, hand-stitched double coats, brushed maxi sweaters, and Donegal cashmere fringes on sweaters give the sense of a light and relaxed environment, being that the place of creation but also where we want to be transported.

The Echoes of Craft exhibition is on view at Spazio Carra from January 13 to 16 during Pitti Uomo days. In this way, a space for craftsmanship and traditional values coexists with new collections in fashion. Spazio Carra is also home to works of art, and having Echoes of Craft live with them marks another benchmark in the artisanal world.
