Le fonti di ispirazione di molti grandi artisti. Le muse esistono da sempre per pittori e scultori, ma cosa dire dei designer di moda?
Utilizzate come “manichini mentali”, le muse non sono solo ambasciatrici del marchio e persone ideali per rappresentarne i valori, ma anche figure in grado di crearli, fornendo ai designer la cosa più preziosa: l’ispirazione. Si tratta di un rapporto molto stretto che fiorisce ispirandoli e aiutando la loro creatività a brillare. Quindi, quando non è il momento di pensare agli ospiti in prima fila ma di cercare ispirazione, per gli stilisti c’è un nome che viene sempre in mente.
Karl Lagerfeld & Ines de la Fressange
Nel caso di Karl Lagerfeld, si trattava di Ines de la Fressange. Descritta come “la donna francese ideale”, la sua eleganza e il suo stile parigino catturarono l’attenzione di Lagerfeld e lei lavorò al suo fianco all’inizio della sua carriera, fino a quando il loro patto non venne infranto. Karl voleva che Ines fosse il volto esclusivo di Chanel, ma lei decise di rappresentare la Francia e di essere “utilizzata” come volto di Marianne, l’allegoria femminile della libertà francese.
In seguito, Lagerfeld si innamorò di Claudia Schiffer e nel 1989 iniziò la loro collaborazione, rendendola la sua nuova musa. Nel 2011, Ines de la Fressange è stata invitata alla sfilata autunno-inverno 2011, ma il rapporto non era più lo stesso e Karl ha sempre saputo come avere uno spettacolo quando iniziava la sfilata. Hubert de Givenchy & Audrey Hepburn
Dal 1953, anno in cui Audrey Hepburn incontrò per la prima volta Givenchy, dopo famosa in tutto il mondo per “Colazione da Tiffany” – probabilmente il ruolo più iconico della Hepburn – Hubert de Givenchy fu un fedele amico e stilista dell’attrice americana. Audrey dichiarò che gli abiti di Givenchy erano gli unici in cui si sentiva se stessa e che lo stilista era in grado di creare personalità.
Al loro primo incontro, lui stava in realtà aspettando Katharine Hepburn, attrice di grande successo dell’epoca, e incontrò Audrey che, con il suo viso innocente e la sua grazia elegante, affascinò lo stilista francese. Il famoso abito nero di Colazione da Tiffany, l’abito rosso di Cenerentola a Parigi e l’abito bianco ricamato in organza di Sabrina sono rimasti impressi nella memoria collettiva, creando un’immagine della loro amicizia che sarebbe durata fino ad oggi.
Alexander McQueen e Isabella Blow
Il giovane stilista incontrò Isabella Blow dopo la sua sfilata alla Royal College of Art, dove lei gli si avvicinò dicendogli che voleva acquistare tutta la sua collezione. Si capirono immediatamente e condivisero il loro approccio trasgressivo e concettuale alla moda. Purtroppo, una lite nel 1996 li portò a non andare più d’accordo e, dopo la morte di lei nel 2007, lui organizzò una mostra con Philip Treacy, stilista inglese, anche se non erano stati in contatto per la maggior parte del tempo. Nel 2010, Alexander McQueen si tolse la vita.
Azzedine Alaïa e Grace Jones
Con la popolarità degli abiti fascianti, crebbero anche la fama dello stilista e della sua musa, una famosa modella e cantante giamaicana la cui celebrità esplose quando interpretò una Bond Girl vestita da Alaïa nel film “Bersaglio mobile 007”. L’abito magenta indossato da Grace Jones alla cerimonia degli Oscar è rimasto impresso fino ad oggi. La loro amicizia era stretta e leale, tanto che lei accompagnò lo stilista a ritirare il premio come Miglior Creatore del 1985 agli Oscar della Moda.
In seguito, Alaïa divenne una figura paterna per la giovane Naomi Campbell, allora sedicenne. Azzedine Alaïa la prese sotto la sua ala protettrice e la ospitò in una stanza della sua casa, instaurando un’amicizia che avrebbe portato la modella al successo come modella e icona del marchio. Apparendo nella maggior parte delle sue sfilate, il suo volto fu rapidamente associato al marchio e all’atteggiamento della donna Alaïa.
Bob Mackie & Cher
Bob Mackie, padre delle paillettes e delle silhouette aderenti, scoprì una giovane Cher e decise che il loro viaggio verso la celebrità sarebbe stato insieme. Si incontrarono nel backstage del “The Carol Burnett Show”, dove Cher e il suo partner erano ospiti nel 1967. Oggi possiamo vedere l’influenza che Cher e Bob Mackie hanno avuto sulle star di oggi, come Sabrina Carpenter e Zendaya, che indossano abiti disegnati da lui e pezzi d’archivio dello stilista. Tanto di cappello agli stilisti e ai creatori per aver mantenuto vivo lo spettacolo.
Rick Owens & Michèle Lamy
Per oltre 30 anni, la coppia creativa ha visto l’uno nell’altra il talento che si sono impegnati così duramente per esternare. Michèle era alla ricerca di qualcuno che ricoprisse il ruolo di modellista per il suo marchio di abbigliamento maschile “Lamy”. È così che si sono incontrati e la situazione si è ribaltata quando Lamy è diventata l’anti-musa delle creazioni di Rick. Hanno deciso di sposarsi nel 2006 e Rick continua a trarre ispirazione da sua moglie, con Michèle che rappresenta il valore fondamentale del suo marchio.
Jeremy Scott & Devon Aoki
Era la terza collezione di Jeremy Scott quando ha chiesto a Devon Aoki di sfilare sulla sua passerella. Il resto è storia. Il suo volto era già apparso sulla copertina della rivista “The Face”, ma la sua carriera di modella è diventata una certezza grazie alla collaborazione con Scott, di cui è diventata la musa ispiratrice. È stata anche la musa di Karl Lagerfeld per diversi anni, ma l’occhio di Jeremy non è stato affascinato da nessun’altra fino ad oggi. Sono cresciuti insieme nelle loro carriere e hanno descritto il loro primo incontro come “amore a prima vista”. Anime gemelle, anime affini o come vogliamo chiamarle, questa coppia creativa non andrà da nessuna parte.
Gianni Versace & Donatella Versace
L’anima ribelle e audace che Donatella Versace è riuscita a infondere nella sua era a Versace è quella che porta dentro di sé. Musa ispiratrice di suo fratello Gianni, i suoi capelli biondi e luminosi e il suo atteggiamento provocatorio lo hanno aiutato a plasmare l’immagine della donna a cui il marchio Versace voleva rivolgersi. Era l’image maker di Gianni, lo seguì a Firenze per studiare moda e poi a Milano, dove lui si stabilì con il suo marchio e iniziò a rendere popolare il loro cognome come quello della casa di moda più ricercata al mondo. Solo che ancora non lo sapevano.
Da parte sua, Donatella non aveva una musa specifica, ma capì rapidamente il potere dei fotografi e delle modelle di rilievo, utilizzando Amber Valletta, Kate Moss, Kristen McMenamy e Claudia Schiffer come protagoniste delle sue campagne, anche ancora oggi.

Designers and their muses
The sources of inspiration for many great artists. Muses have been around forever for painters and sculptors, but what about fashion designers?
Used as “mental mannequins”, muses are not just brand ambassadors and the ideal person to represent a brand’s values but also someone who can create them by giving designers the most precious thing: inspiration. It’s a tight-knit relationship that flourishes while inspiring them and helping their creativity sparkle. So, when it’s not the moment to think about first-row attendees but about being inspired, for the designers there was one name that always came to mind.
Karl Lagerfeld & Ines de la Fressange
In Karl Lagerfeld’s case, it was Ines de la Fressange. Described as “the ideal Frenchwoman,” her elegance and “parisianness” captured Lagerfeld’s eye and worked alongside him during the start of his career until their one pact was broken. Karl wanted Ines to be the face of Chanel and Chanel only, but she decided to represent France and be “used” as the face of Marianne-France’s female allegory of Liberty.
After that, he fell in love with Claudia Schiffer and began their partnership in 1989, making her his new muse. In 2011, Ines de la Fressange was invited to the autumn-winter 2011 catwalk, but the relationship was not the same, and Karl always knew how to give a spectacle when showtime started. He then went on to Linda Evangelista, Cara Delevingne, and Kristen Stewart to find inspiration and follow the zeitgeist.
Hubert de Givenchy & Audrey Hepburn
From 1953 when Audrey Hepburn first met Givenchy, the then internationally famous actress for “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”-probably Hepburn’s most recognizable part- Hubert de Givenchy had been a loyal friend and dressmaker for the American actress. Audrey would declare that Givenchy’s pieces were the only garments in which she felt like herself and that the designer was able to create personality.
On their first encounter he was actually waiting for Katharine Hepburn, blockbuster actress of the moment, and met with Audrey who, with an innocent face and elegant grace, charmed the French designer. The famous black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the red dress from Cinderella in Paris, and the white organza embroidered dress from Sabrina have lingered in the collective mind creating an image of their friendship that would have lived on until today.
Alexander McQueen & Isabella Blow
The young designer met Isabella Blow after his RCA Fashion Show where she approached him saying that she wanted to buy his whole collection. Immediately they just understood each other and got each other’s transgressive and conceptual approach to fashion. Sadly, an argument in 1996 left the two of them on not-so-good terms and after her death in 2007 he staged an exhibition with Philip Treacy, English designer, even though they had not been in contact for most of the time. In 2010, Alexander McQueen took his own life.
Azzedine Alaïa e Grace Jones
As the bandage dress became popular so did the designer and his muse, a famous Jamaican model and singer whose stardom exploded as a Bond Girl dressed in Alaïa while acting in “A View to a Kill”. Grace Jones’ magenta dress for the Oscars ceremony lives on until today. Their friendship was tight and loyal with her walking with the designer to receive the award for Best Creator of 1985 at the Fashion Oscars.
Further on, he found himself being a father figure to a young 16-year-old Naomi Campbell. Under his wing and inside his house, Azzedine Alaïa let the model move into a room in his house and created a friendship that would skyrocket her as a model and a brand icon. Appearing in most of his shows, her face was quickly associated with the brand and the attitude of an Alaïa woman.
Bob Mackie & Cher
Father of sequins and shape figuring, Bob Mackie found a young Cher and decided their journey to stardom would be together. They met backstage at “The Carol Burnett Show” where Cher and her partner were guests in 1967. Her courage and his adventurous soul made them the perfect non-romantic couple, and just a few years later he would be dressing Cher for the 1974 Met Gala event, one of her most remembered looks.
After that, he went on to design for her on “The Sonny and Cher Show” and then “The Cher Show” where every outfit reveal was a gag! In Mackie’s own words: “to dress the most amazingly put-together lady, someone as gorgeous as our girl Cher-it was a job from heaven! As of today, we can see the influence Cher and Bob Mackie have created in today’s stars like Sabrina Carpenter and Zendaya being dressed by him and wearing archive pieces of the designer. Chapeau to the stylists and the creators for keeping the show on.
Rick Owens & Michelle Lamy
For over 30 years, the creative couple had seen in each other the talent they fought so hard to exteriorize. Michelle was looking for someone to cover the position of pattern maker for her menswear brand “Lamy.” That’s how they met and the table turned when Michelle turned into the anti-muse for Rick’s creations. They decided to get married in 2006 and Rick continues to draw inspiration from his wife, with Michelle representing the core value of his brand.
Jeremy Scott & Devon Aoki
It was Jeremy Scott’s third collection when he begged for Devon Aoki to walk his runway. The rest is history. Her face was already on “The Face” magazine’s cover but her career as a model became a certainty being by Scott’s side and turning into his muse. She was also Karl Lagerfeld’s muse for several years but Jeremy’s eye wouldn’t be mesmerized by anybody else until today. They have grown together in their careers and described their first meeting as “love at first sight.” Twin flames, soulmates or whatever we want to call it, this creative duo is not going anywhere.
Gianni Versace & Donatella Versace
The rebel and bold soul that Donatella Versace was able to inflict in her era at Versace is the one that she actually carries inside. Muse to her brother Gianni, her light, blond hair and provocative attitude helped him shape the woman that Versace’s brand wanted to reach out to. She was an image-maker to Gianni, following him to Florence to study fashion and then to Milan where he settled with his brand and started to popularize their last name as one that would be the most sought-after fashion house in the world. They just didn’t know it yet.
On her side, Donatella didn’t have a specific muse but she quickly understood the power of relevant photographers and relevant models using Amber Valletta, Kate Moss, Kristen McMenamy and Claudia Schiffer as protagonists in her campaigns even as of today.
