Il percorso di Max Zara Sterck

La stilista Max Zara, di origini olandesi, ha un passato come ginnasta professionista che viene rispecchiato nella sua ispirazione con il movimento. Il corpo e il movimento sono armonizzati attraverso i capi. La sua casa e il suo ambiente l’hanno motivato ad essere creativa – un padre grafico e una madre fotografa – in cui viene spinta ad essere se stessa, ad esprimersi attraverso qualsiasi forma d’arte.

Nel 2015 finisce la sua laurea in Fashion Design presso l’ArtEZ, Università delle Arti, e debutta nel 2024 nella settimana della moda di Amsterdam. La sua esperienza lavorativa passa da brand come J.W Anderson a Alexander McQueen fino allo scorso anno in cui decide di dedicarsi completamente al suo proprio progetto.

Nel suo spazio ad Amsterdam Ovest, quando inizia a realizzare un capo, lo progetta esplorando le proporzioni del cliente e le sue azioni quotidiane. “Durante le prove e con il nuovo abito, li vedo muoversi in modo diverso, perché scoprono una nuova coscienza di sé: ed è qui che il mio lavoro davvero prende forma.” dichiara Max Zara Sterck per quanto riguarda il suo processo creativo.

Collezioni e ispirazioni

Dalla precedente esperienza atletica trasforma la sua collezione in una ricerca tridimensionale di volumi e vestibilità. L’estensione del corpo e la valorizzazione della diversità come espressione pura, vengono raccontate attraverso una narrazione che unisce i materiali, le forme e una grande attenzione ai dettagli. Le collezioni sono praticamente bianco e nero dando alla designer lo spazio di concentrarsi sulla forma e i volumi, come un capo si posa e agisce con il corpo.

Evolve dal prêt-à-porter al su misura con l’utilizzo di tessuti ad alta gamma. La stilista invita all’esplorazione del proprio corpo, le emozioni e l’energia. I materiali, a volte aderenti a volte no, funzionano come una seconda pelle che non costringono assolutamente la libertà del corpo ma permettono l’esperimentazione.

Sterck spende parecchio tempo a fare sperimentazioni con soluzioni sostenibili e vuole che si veda riflesso nelle loro pratiche come quella di acquisire scarti di tessuto da grandi case di moda. Di solito, avvolge i ballerini che fanno le prove nel suo studio e mentre lei disegna, loro si muovono e riesce a catturare quel movimento nelle sue bozze.

Un grande valore che possiamo aggiudicare al brand è la sicurezza che ci dà. “Ho notato che la loro postura cambiava, aumentando la loro sicurezza. Sembrava quasi un cambiamento nel loro atteggiamento.” racconta Max Zara Sterck a Tribute To Magazine. La forza risiede nella propria consapevolezza del corpo e il potenziale che possiamo sentire dentro un capo di questo brand. 

Una gioia al tatto e alla vista. Il brand olandese prende come valori la libertà e l’espressione del sé e lo presenta con colori sobri, linee asimmetriche e tessuti leggeri. Tutto fluisce e niente costringe. “Ci sono così tante complessità e riflessioni dietro le mie creazioni, ma il risultato finale è sempre quello di cercare di raggiungere la semplicità.”

Max Zara Sterck’s journey

Dutch designer Max Zara has a background as a professional gymnast, which is reflected in her inspiration from movement. The body and movement are harmonized through the garments. Her home and environment have motivated her to be creative—her father is a graphic designer and her mother is a photographer—where she is encouraged to be herself and express herself through any form of art.

In 2015, she completed her degree in Fashion Design at ArtEZ University of the Arts and made her debut in 2024 at Amsterdam Fashion Week. Her work experience ranges from brands such as J.W Anderson to Alexander McQueen, before last year when she started devoting herself entirely to her own project.

In her studio in Amsterdam West, when she begins to create a garment, she designs it by exploring the client’s proportions and daily actions. “During fittings and with the new dress, I see them move differently because they discover a new self-awareness: and that’s where my work really takes shape,” says Max Zara Sterck about her creative process.

Collections and inspirations

Drawing on her previous athletic experience, she transforms her collection into a three-dimensional exploration of volume and wearability. The extension of the body, the celebration of diversity as pure expression, is conveyed through a narrative that combines materials, shapes, and great attention to detail. The collections are predominantly black and white, giving the designer the space to focus on shape and volume, how a garment sits and interacts with the body.

She evolves from ready-to-wear to made-to-measure with the use of high-end fabrics. The designer invites exploration of one’s body, emotions, and energy. The materials, sometimes tight-fitting, sometimes not, function as a second skin that does not constrain the freedom of the body but allows for experimentation.

Sterck spends a lot of time experimenting with sustainable solutions and wants this to be reflected in her practices, such as acquiring fabric scraps from major fashion houses. She usually drapes on the dancers in her studio in her designs, and while she sketches, they move and she manages to capture that movement in her drafts.

One great value we can attribute to the brand is the confidence it gives us. “I noticed that their posture changed, increasing their confidence. It almost seemed like a change in their attitude,” Max Zara Sterck tells Tribute To Magazine. Strength lies in body awareness and the potential we can feel inside a garment from this brand. 

A joy to the touch’sensations and to the eye. The Dutch brand embraces freedom and self-expression as values and presents them with sober colors, asymmetrical lines, and lightweight fabrics. Everything flows and nothing constricts. “There are so many complexities and reflections behind my creations, but the end result is always to strive for simplicity.”
